Welcome to the second monthly newsletter regarding music activities. I received encouraging feedback from the first one, which will be available as a PDF [edit: actually, it’s archived here on Substack] when I figure out how to link all the things to all the things.
Today, we have information on the four projects mentioned last month: Mala Nota, Red and The Rebels, Channels, and a percussion-centered project led by Josh Peters. In addition, I bring you the first of an occasional series regarding open-mics and other curiosities. Here we go…
Mala Nota <https://malanotamusic.com/> completed recording the first album earlier this month, and it’s currently being mixed for release very soon.
The next show is December 9 with Onda Stereo <https://www.instagram.com/onda.stereo/> and Atash <http://atash.com/> at Sahara Lounge <https://www.saharalounge.com/>.

Meanwhile, here are two phone videos from the September 16 show at Hotel Vegas:

Red and The Rebels <https://redandtherebels.com/> has two shows this month:

The October 1 Channels <https://wearechannels.com/> Better Together show was… beautiful. A video of and about the event is being edited, and should be available for the November newsletter. We’re looking forward to producing another in early 2023. A few more ideas are in development, and we’re excited to bring them your way.

The sanctuary sounds incredible, and there were programs.
The Josh Peters Sextet’s September 13th HAAM day performance was punctuated by the comings and goings of bank customers, and the plaintive tone of the door alarm as they entered and exited. We’re planning a flow of shows to commence after the holidays, and I’m looking forward to getting this sound in your ears.
Finally, regarding open-mics and other curiosities, I bring you the idea of a rotating cast of characters playing music, or telling jokes (sometimes both) in nearly the comfort of your living room. Or porch. If you want an evening away from the screen, consider making the trek.
The first open-mic I present to you is the Thursday night event at Giddy Ups. It’s hosted by a gentleman named Dewey, who keeps things moving along in a generous and friendly manner. He also performs, both in a set and spontaneously joining others, on guitar, harmonica, and vocals.
One never knows what will happen at an open-mic. At Giddy Ups there’s definitely a cadre of regulars who sometimes sit-in with each other. And dance, and talk and catch-up on news of the week. There’s also some stand-up comedy, and folks new to town or passing through who try out new songs or present their takes on well-known songs of their youth.

All-in-all, the crowd is supportive of whatever happens, even if they are telling a performer they didn’t particularly care for what just happened.
Every once in a while—and this is what makes it worth the visit—something happens that’s spectacular. Last week there was a performer from Colorado, wearing an “I Stand With The Sioux” t-shirt and playing mandolin. He presented “Lawyers Guns and Money,” “Pinball Wizard,” and “Jumping Jack Flash.” You don’t get to witness that every day. On the other hand, sometimes there is an absolute spectacle. You have been warned.
Open Mic every Thursday
Giddy Ups 12010 Menchaca Rd Austin TX 78748 Sign-ups at 7:30 Performances begin at 8:00, three songs per (generally)
Thanks again for reading. I hope to see you at a show, and look forward to whatever news I’ll have to share next month. Feel free to send questions or topics you might like to hear about from me.
Peace, Love, and Art,
Ralph
