Time flies when you're nomadic

End of an era, a springboard

Last month I led with an image of Sara’s first paint spatters, drips, and spills on the new studio floor. This month, I give you this:

a half-dozen years looks like this (about 10’ x 14’)

… about six years of work, which I’m about to paint over as we finish moving out of the warehouse studio. Many of you have heard me say, “Time flies when you’re nomadic,” which goes back to moving around different neighborhoods in San Francisco and Oakland every couple of years. At this writing, what’s left is large paintings and woodworking machinery. And cleaning, patching walls, repainting the floor.

Each studio contains its own era. Sara has moved from San Francisco (5th and Mission, in a building that’s just a memory) to a Redwood City warehouse, and then to the South Congress warehouse in Austin, where her work became more focused on illuminated landscapes of internal life: heart, mind, soul, connections with all things. This exploration is just beginning, so while we kiss the S. Congress era goodbye, we already see her new work getting deeper and more vibrant. And I’m talking about the darker paintings.

Former Mala Nota guitarist Leo Ramírez has been releasing music as Lēo. His most recent single, “Into The Night,” can be found here (Apple Music) and here (Spotify). The music morphs. You’ll morph, too.

In news of the unexpected, I’ve been fortunate to have two rehearsals (well, not exactly rehearsals, more like gatherings) as part of an improvisational group led by a French horn player. In this case, I am playing keyboards/synthesizers, which I haven’t done since… a long time ago, mainly back before there was something called presets. We next convene on August 3, so I may have more to say then, and perhaps some clips.

Thanks again for reading. Feel free to send questions or topics you might like to hear about from me.

Peace, Love, and Art,
